Over the years, many people have sought to use link farms to increase the ranking of their website.   Typically, webmasters generate massive numbers of “bookmarks” in the process of exchanging links.  Unfortunately, if your site has too many links, and not enough content, it can cause a great deal of damage to your ranking.  In addition, if your site is not listed as a bookmarking services, potential viewers will simply exit your site, thinking it is nothing more than a sales gimmick.

Social bookmarking is the perfect solution to both issues.  Among other things, you can let users generate whole pages of public bookmarks.  If they are interested in certain sites, chances are there is good information on them.  In addition, if you allow users to create descriptions of each URL, and allow feedback, you will no longer have a  link farm situation.

Aside from this, you can also use a bookmarking service to create a diverse residual revenue.  Consider a situation where you want to work with several  topics related to environmentalism.  In these instances, you can easily go through the bookmarks harvested by your members, and see if there are any useful for affiliate marketing.  If you encourage members to keep a blog along with their bookmarks, you can also use their pages to generate pay-per-click revenue.   That said, if you want to take advantage of social bookmarking, you will need to make sure that your website scripts are easy to work with and understand.  That will make the task easier.
