John Battelle’s recent post as well as an email from a friend turned me to Tynt. John goes into a bunch of detail that I won’t repeat here, but essentially what Tynt does is tracks what people are copying and pasting from your site’s content while also adding an attribution link to your site when they do so.

This is a great idea. It’s a little bit shocking nobody has thought of this until now, but it’s a very useful tool for publishers in a few different ways:

  • Generate more links and traffic to your site – Every time any of your content is pasted into email or a blog post Tynt’s code adds a link to the page the content was copied from. This will help drive users back to the original content, as well as potentially help search engine ranking if those attribution links make it onto web pages.
  • See what type of content is being copied – Tynt provides analytics that shows you what content is being shared and how much traffic it is driving. This can be useful to learn what type of content you should create more of, and what types of people are sharing it so you can see if you’re getting engagement from key audiences.
  • Generate revenue from searches – Tynt recognizes short pieces of copied text as likely searches, and intercepts the search going to one of the major engines and then plans to share the revenue from searches that result in ad clicks with the publishers. I’m not sure this is fully scaled yet, but it looks like a potential revenue stream for larger publishers that could be worthwhile.

That being said, I think Tynt would be more powerful built into a pre-existing analytics service. Having to go to another place to check out your “copy and paste” stats separate from the rest of your analytics is a pain. Additionally, having to place another code snippet on your page is not ideal either, it’d be much easier if this was part of an analytics package that already existed today. Maybe this makes Tynt an acquisition target down the road by either a larger analytic company or one of the search engines who wants to serve search results on Tynt copy and paste search queries. Interesting stuff.

Being an internet marketer for many years now I have heard some really out of whack misconceptions when it comes to SEO and how it helps grow a business online.

Here are some of the most important misconceptions of SEO that I think should be called out:

1. It is all Technical – Search engine optimization is only about 15-20% technical. The rest requires a marketing approach. Think about it, if you are trying to get rankings in the search engines don’t you have to put yourself in your audiences shoes and anticipate what they search for, what they read and what they want to see on your website? That requires a marketing hat.

2. Rankings Happen Quick – Search engine optimization is time and labor intensive. It takes time to get things moving in any direction. Nothing happens over night or even in one month or two.

3. I Only Need to Do It for 2 Months – SEO does not have a finish line. When you take a marketing approach to your SEO it is something you never really stop doing. Why would you stop marketing your company? You wouldn’t and that is why your SEO should never stop either. Rankings are not the only goal for search engine marketing. Building many relevant one way links is also a goal. This can only happen over time.

4. SEO Costs $39.95 – When it comes to search engine marketing you really get what you pay for. That doesn’t mean it should cost an arm and a leg but price should be appropriate to amount of work and man hours put into a certain effort in order to get it right. Prices that sound to good to be true usually are. Do you really think you can grow a business online successfully for the same cost as a cup of coffee per day?

5. SEO Software Should Do the Trick – Search engine optimization cannot be put on auto pilot by some software program. Some software’s are capable of isolating gaps or errors in your website or campaign but that still requires you as a business owner or marketer to make the necessary changes to get things moving in the right direction.

There are many misconceptions in the SEO industry and over time they should all be cleared up as the industry continues to mature and evolve. I only highlighted several that came to my mind, please feel free to share any that you may have heard.

Social media marketing has been the talk of the town for the last twelve months to the point that search engine marketing and optimization has almost become the forgotten brother. If social media marketing is working and delivering traffic – great. But wouldn’t it be even better if you could also harness the free traffic available through the search engines.

There is a place for both forms of marketing in most every type business. It is a matter of keeping everything in perspective and working in areas where your business is going to gain the most benefits. Traffic is not necessarily the key – sales or converting traffic is the only way you can hope to stay in business. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen companies that think that a certain social media marketing strategies are the end all be all…best thing for sliced bread. Really spend you time understanding the audiences of each social site to make sure they are a good fit for you company, before you start becoming active on a site. For instance, if you own a real estate company, why become active a social networking website for people outside the united states or a smaller demographic?

Late last month we published a list of the top websites presented by Compete. That list should tell you where best to focus your efforts. Are you spending all day on Twitter? Why? It only receives a small fraction of the traffic compared to the search engines, Facebook and YouTube. There are many businesses than can justify the time spent on Twitter through extra sales or conversions. Others are trying to pump up their business through Twitter when their efforts may be better focused in other areas.

One of the hardest tasks for any business looking to increase their visibility, visitors and sales from the web, is the ability to keep everything in perspective. Online marketing needs to address your businesses needs today, tomorrow and next week. Focus on what is working then look to other areas that offer the potential for growth. By keeping everything in perspective, you will at least maintain your current flow of traffic while waiting for new marketing strategies to bear fruit.

What Great Content Really Means

You’ve heard the entire search engine optimziation world repeatedly talk about how you need to create compelling or “great” visitor focused content. We all have heard many times that once you have great content then you will magically make you a lot of money or boost your search engine rankings like a magic carpet ride. :) Well, there may not be any magic involved, but you should always produce the best possible content for every page of your website. If you spend the time writing (or hiring a great content copywriter) content for every page of your website, generally speaking it can help your website achieve great results.

These results are not only from the search engines but having great content on your website helps in several key ways, including the following:

  • Great content helps deliver your message to the audiences of your website.
  • Great content (with excellent call to action) helps generate your conversion (leads, sales, etc).
  • Great content keeps people on your website as long as possible.
  • Great content keeps them coming back.
  • Oh yeah, great content can be naturally optimized to generate the right type of targeted visitors from the search engines to your site.

Keeping clients coming back does not necessarily mean to your website, but it does mean to your business. Once you’ve sold them you’ve just got to keep them and that means good customer service (that’s a different blog post). Keeping people on your site means closing the sale. But you have to keep them long enough to make your case (or sales pitch) by having great call to actions on your website.

Another question that I always get asked is, how much content do I need on each page of my website? The answer to that question as far as I am concerned is quality over quantity is the best policy. If it takes 200 words to accomplish your goals and deliver the message on a particular page then so be it. If it takes 100 words of great content to describe a product, then that works too. Be in tune with your audience and understand what is too much or too little content.

Great content is no magic trick. It’s just good copywriting. If you can’t do it yourself, hire someone who can!

Google News Drops “Text Version” Option

Google News has dropped the “Text Version” feature sometime over the past week or so. A Google News Help thread has some complaints dating back to October 22nd.

Personally, I don’t think I ever used the text option for Google News, but some have. I did spot a screen shot with the option on Flickr, over here, just look on the left hand column. Now, if you go to Google News, you won’t see the “Text Version” link anymore.

Why did Google drop it? Fred from the Google News team said in the Google News Help thread:

We’re always experimenting with ways to make Google News more useful. Occasionally, this also means we have to re-evaluate our efforts to be sure we focus on features that make the most sense for our users.

We decided to phase out Text view, in part, because we believe Headline view provides much of the same functionality. You can select Headline view and see all of the article links that Google News has to offer. If you’re on a slow connection, Headline view should be faster than the default Google News homepage.

We apologize for any frustration this might cause. We remain committed to helping all of our readers discover as much news content as possible, while helping publishers find and reach new audiences online.
