Over the past year or so, I have started to see more businesses and marketers and search engine optimization professionals suggest that blogging is the best kept SEO secret online. I’d have to agree. But I’ve been saying that for several years now. Why is blogging such a great SEO tool?

For starters, every time you update your blog with excellent user focused content you invite the search engines back to crawl it. The major search engines really do love fresh content and every blog post is great search bot food. But, and this is even more important, each blog post is a separate web page, which means every time you publish a new blog post you are giving yourself one more opportunity to be found in the search engines.

The High Value Of Second Generation Links

Off site search engine optimization or relevant link building is not just about building inbound links to one site and forgetting about it. A true link building plan is about building links for the purpose of driving up authority. But how do you do that?

Well, authority is based on a number of factors, but one of those factors is link relevance. Another factor is link age. And another is the authority of the site linking to you. If the authority of the site linking to you is important then it makes sense that your inbound links need to be from a high authority site – some of them, at least.

So how do you get high authority sites to link to you? One way is to go and find a bunch of high authority sites and bet for links, another way is to build those sites.

Let’s say you have Site A and you build another site, Site B, to link to Site A. That helps Site A, but how does Site B build authority without attracting links of its own. You need to do your normal link building for Site B to increase its authority so that links from that site to Site A become more valuable. Those are called second generation links.

Links to Site A from Site B are first generation links. Links you build to Site B are second generation links. Their purpose is to increase the authority of Site B so that links from there to Site A carry more weight. You can also link from the same sources that link to Site B to Site A as long as you don’t also link from Site a back to those sources or from Site B to those sources. You don’t want to give off signals of a network. But you don’t want to build solid and relevant one-way links that over time grow in authority for all your relevant sites. The bottom line is to provide value in any of the websites that you own with a solid purpose and goals. Promote your websites the right ways, from many different relevant sources over time and the search engine authority will follow.

Bing Is Revolutionizing Search of Twitter

We’ve discussed before the importance of Twitter for search and for the search engine optimization industry. We’ve discussed before the importance of Twitter for search and for the search engine optimization industry. Bing is ranking tweets and is in discussions with Facebook to incorporate its social media content in search results. No doubt that Google will follow this act. But the interesting thing about how Bing is ranking tweets is that your Twitter followers can be a ranking factor. This from WebProNews:

The answer is: Bing weighs tweets by follower counts. “If someone has a lot of followers, his/her Tweet may get ranked higher,” says Bing. “If a tweet is exactly the same as other Tweets, it will get ranked lower.”

Can you say Twitter follower spam?

This really does look like a search gaming haven for some people and it provides a great user experience for people searching within Bing. Choose a keyword and tweet it, but first make sure you’ve got 500,000 followers so you can rank the highest for that tweet. There will definitely need to be some tweaks to that Bing Twitter search algorithm and my bet is that Google will approach the whole Twitter search ranking question with a lot more better in the very near future.

Are you prepared for the next iteration of search wars?

One million video views!

This year we’ve been making and posting videos on an official webmaster video channel, and earlier today we hit our one millionth video view. Making these little movies has been a ton of fun and we’ve covered dozens of topics for site owners.

We decided to celebrate in a couple ways. First, we added captions to all 150+ videos (over 11 hours of information). That’s important because for movies with captions, you can translate the captions into different languages. Now if you want to watch my videos but see the captions in Portuguese or German or Turkish, you can!

The second way we celebrated is with a fun video. As you may know, I recently lost a bet with my team and they shaved off all my hair. Click to see the 30 second explanation of why I’m bald. But you may not know that my team recorded a video as I lost my hair. Now you can watch and laugh along too:

I hope that you enjoy the video! You may want to subscribe to the webmaster video channel to see more free webmaster videos in the future.
