At SES London there was an interesting video about how current SEO people perceive the black hat SEO community. They asked 50 SEO’s how they felt about the black hat community and received many different responses. It was interesting to hear that some of them said they are innovative and push the edges of the algorithms like it was a positive thing that they do. That is all great but what happens when rankings are not as important as they once where?

Check out the video below from SES London about black hat SEOs:

The overall consensus was that they hurt the industry more than they help it. I am all about innovation and finding new ways to communicate your business online, but building a business online requires more than search manipulation which is mostly what black SEO individuals usually target. They are techniques that often times push the technical boundaries not the marketing boundaries which are two vastly different areas to focus on. Search engine marketing in my opinion should be done with a focus on brand building and not a focus of rankings. Search engine rankings will happen naturally over time as you build your business and your links naturally over time. When you force rankings you force yourself to cut corners which over time could come back to bite you in the you know where! Anyway, that is my 2 cents on this topic :)

A Real Yahoo Search Update for January 2010?

Earlier this month, we reported on a rumored Yahoo Search update. Although it appeared to be an update, the consensus was that what people were seeing was the paid inclusion being weeded out of the organic search results.

But the thread at WebmasterWorld has been updated by BillyS, who often tracks Yahoo. Billy thinks that Yahoo is now updating, for real, this time. He said:

Yahoo tweaked something today around 1:30 until 3:00 Eastern time. We had a huge spike in traffic. Anyone else see this?

Yahoo updates typically don’t get as much reaction as a Google update. And over the past year or so, Yahoo updates have received a lot less attention then they have in the past. This is likely due to them losing search market share and giving up to Bing.

Google Does Real Time Search : See It For Popeye

Google announced a dozen things yesterday, but one of those announcements was on real time search in the search results. Google teamed up with Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, FriendFeed, Jaiku and Identi.ca to make these real time search results possible.

In short, Google sticks another “universal result” in the search results when they feel a real time result makes sense. For example, a search for popeye, which is currently trending due to the Google Doodle Popeye logo, shows this real time result:

Google Popeye on Real Time Results

Yes, that is my tweet showing a link to this site. In fact, it also shows other Tweeting links to my story. Here is a link to the real time landing page results.

Here is a video explaining this in more detail:

We have threads on this announcement at WebmasterWorld and DigitalPoint Forums. The consensus in the threads are that this clutters up the search results even more and do not provide a simple interface for people to find relevant results. Of course, most SEOs don’t want their web results pushed down in the search results page – but SEOs will adapt and use Twitter, Facebook and so on to make sure their results do show up in that area when applicable.
