Google UK Showing US Based Spelling Suggestions

If you search at Google UK for keywords such as [search engine optimisation] or [personalised napkins] or the like, you will get US based spelling suggestions from Google.

Here are some screen captures:

Google UK Spelling Suggestions

The old S vs Z in US vs UK English.

As you can imagine, this is not just annoying for UK searchers but also can be a bit insulting. So far, Google has not commented in any of the threads I have seen report this.

Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld, DigitalPoint Forums & Google Webmaster Help.

Update: Google seemed to quietly fix this in the past 24 hours.

Update 2: Here is a statement from Google over 24 hours later:

We recently introduced a change to the spell correction feature on the google.co.uk domain. This change introduced a bug where we were suggesting American English spelling refinements. We have temporarily rolled back the change while we fix the problem.

Vote For The Doodle 4 Google UK Winner

Google Doodle 4 GoogleVoting is open for the UK’s edition of the Doodle 4 Google competition. Google has run this competition in both the US and UK for four years now.

This years competition:

We’re asking young people aged 5–16 from across the UK to design their own doodle. This year’s theme is ‘My Hero’. We’d love to see the figures young people look up to represented in their doodles, whether family, friends, people in the community, or world figures. We’re interested in the people considered heroes for the 21st century and how entrants represent them using images.

To vote, go to this page. You can vote for each of the four brackets, 5-7 years old, 7-11 years old, 11-14 years old and 14-16 years olds.

December 2009 Google Webmaster Report

This is the last Google Webmaster Report of 2009 and it was a pretty busy month. The main changes this past month was Caffeine going live on one data center, the new user fade in interface is live, personalized search becoming the default and Google’s attempts to appease the news business.

You can read last months report in the November ’09 webmaster write up. The new WebmasterWorld thread does not have a lot of new chatter going on. The normal ranking fluctuations discussions are going on. One person said the UK results match the US results on November 4th. But overall, not much chatter in that thread going on.

Here are the Google highlights for the past month:

Video Recap of Weekly Search Buzz :: November 27, 2009

itunes-subscribe-video.pngThere seems to be a major Google update going on, some suspect it is Caffeine related while others do not. Google said comment spam can hurt you bad. Rich snippets are now showing in other Google properties, such as Google UK and Canada. Don’t waste your time with a banned domain. Bing and News Corp try to team up to bait Google on indexing their content. Is Bing now handling 301 redirects properly? If you are banned in AdWords, you likely will never be unbanned. Google opened product ads to all U.S. advertisers and then showed off all their new ad styles. Google Maps bug removed the local pack for web design like searches. Google AdSense bug showed weird HTML characters in the ads. Google is testing related search results in the top navigation bar. The Michelle Obama racist image reappeared and Google could not remove it, so they placed an ad as to why not. Finally, we posted all the Thanksgiving logos from Google, Yahoo, AOL, Ask.com, Bing, Dogpile and others – so check it out. That was this past week at the Search Engine Roundtable.

Rich Snippets Now in Google UK & Other Non-US Properties

First blogged at BigMouthMedia, Google’s Rich Snippets feature which went live in the U.S. in May is now showing up in other Google properties, such as the UK, Canada and other English based language countries.

When it first launched, it was only based in the US. But now if you try to bring up sites that provide rich snippets to Google outside of the US, some show them. For example, Google UK, Google Canada and Google Ireland all show them, but Google Israel, Google Mexico and Google Italy do not. I believe it has to do with the language of that country.

A screen shot of Rich Snippets now showing in the Google UK:

A screen shot of Rich Snippets not showing in Google Mexico:

Rich Snippets Not in Google Mexico

This was first spotted in a thread we covered earlier that felt rich snippets were coming to smaller sites, still not sure if that is true.

Veteran’s Day 2009 Logos from Google, Bing, Ask But Not Yahoo

Today is Veteran’s Day and the search engines, well most of them, are commemorating the day. We have logos from Google, Bing, Ask.com, AOL and even here but not from Yahoo, at least not yet. Here are the logos.

Google:

Veterans Day at Google

Bing:

Veterans Day at Bing

Ask:

Veterans Day at Ask.com

AOL (Flash):

Search Engine Roundtable:

Veterans Day at SERoundtable.com

For the past logos for this holiday, see 2008 Veterans logos (no Yahoo there also), 2007 Veterans logos and then we skipped to 2007 Veterans logos.

Also, at Google UK today, they have a logo with a poppy for a belated Remembrance Day. Yes, Remembrance Day was a few days ago, but the Sesame Street logos trumped it.

Google Celebrates Anniversaries For Sesame Street, Wallace & Gromit & Many Others

So when I visited Google.com, I saw Big Bird’s legs. It is the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street and Google made a Doodle for it. But then I noticed other Google properties not only sporting Sesame Street but also Doodles for other learning programs that are popular in those regions. We have Google logos for the 20th birthday of Wallace & Gromit, and these other regional characters: Abigal, Boombah Chamki, Ieniemienie, Abelardo Montoya and Kami.

Here are the logos:

Big Bird’s Sesame Street found at Google.com, Google.ca, Google.es, Google.hr, Google.co.kr, Google.co.jp, Google.com.ly, Google.fr, Google.com.ph, Google.com.qa, Google.pl, Google.com.bh, Google.com.hk, Google.com.kw, Google.ps, Google.com.sa, Google.ae, Google.com.eg, Google.co.id, Google.jo, Google.com.lb, and Google.com.om.
