If you have been an internet marketing specialist for some time now you will know that there is a great deal of constant learning required to get the job done right. You have to be willing to learn almost every day because the search game is consistently changing. Reading daily industry sources and blogs will be vital for any online success.

Let’s take a look at some ways SEO efforts are cut short and slow down overall progress:

1. Lack of Knowledge:
As an internet marketer I am reading blogs almost every single day. Keep yourself up to date with all the newest methods of marketing and online exposure is important. Applying new marketing efforts online is the only way you are going to either stay in front of your competition or beat them in the search marketing game.

2. Old-fashioned Techniques:
If you are still relying on techniques done from 2005 you’re not going to last very long in the search industry. Things have changed quite a bit and they continue to change drastically year after year. The search engines have evolved and it is even more important to utilize all the newest trends and techniques to market a website in today’s business space.

3. Messing Up Step 1:
Website optimization should be the very first marketing effort any website should be doing before they venture out and start marketing their business online. This doesn’t mean just optimizing it for certain keywords. This means optimizing it for the right keywords along with changing or tweaking any conversion metrics on the website. If your conversion metrics are not in place then what do you think is going to happen to your visitors when they land on your website? Not much.

As an internet marketer you have to always be sharpening your skills when it comes to SEO. Search engine marketing requires varying up the approach and customizing things for every client. Keeping your skills sharp and up to date is a must to make the serious marketing impacts that many people are looking for. As soon as you step back and feel like you don’t have to learn anything anymore is when things start to slow down and really become sour on your online visibility. Your websites and your client’s website will begin to feel the effects of this slow down so it is important to keep your knowledge tight and your techniques even tighter.

Win an Online Olympic Gold Medal

Having a successful online search engine optimization campaign is a lot like trying to win an Olympic gold medal. Nobody wakes up one day and says that they want to join the Olympics and it happens by the end of the week. SEO works the same way in the sense that things take time to build and grow and patience and good hard work is what it takes to have a successful search engine optimization mindset and approach.

Below are some of the most important similarities between an Olympic gold athlete and a successful SEO campaign:
• Both require having a solid plan in place.
• Both require hard work and dedication.
• Both require patience.
• Both require outside the box thinking.
• Both require early mornings and late nights.
• Both require having a vision.
• Both require great sacrifice.
• Both require knowledge and education.
• Both require a competitive edge.
• Both require awareness.

Search engine marketing is not a fly by night marketing effort and neither is training for the Olympics. You have to have solid plan in place and the ability to put in hard work and dedication to get the job done right. If you want your website to be visible and highly trafficked you need to be able to apply some outside the box thinking to achieve your goals. Building an online brand doesn’t happen by the end of the week or even by the end of the month. The best approach is to put a plan in place that you continuously expand upon. Write it down! Visualizing your vision will allow things to move with much less friction. Constantly update your plan of attack. Research new areas you want to be visible and make it happen. Most importantly you must stick to it.

These are all similarities that are relevant across not just Olympic athletes and internet marketers but anyone trying to make a name for themselves in any industry. As an aspiring internet marketer we could all take a page out of an Olympic athlete’s playbook.

Being an internet marketer for many years now I have heard some really out of whack misconceptions when it comes to SEO and how it helps grow a business online.

Here are some of the most important misconceptions of SEO that I think should be called out:

1. It is all Technical – Search engine optimization is only about 15-20% technical. The rest requires a marketing approach. Think about it, if you are trying to get rankings in the search engines don’t you have to put yourself in your audiences shoes and anticipate what they search for, what they read and what they want to see on your website? That requires a marketing hat.

2. Rankings Happen Quick – Search engine optimization is time and labor intensive. It takes time to get things moving in any direction. Nothing happens over night or even in one month or two.

3. I Only Need to Do It for 2 Months – SEO does not have a finish line. When you take a marketing approach to your SEO it is something you never really stop doing. Why would you stop marketing your company? You wouldn’t and that is why your SEO should never stop either. Rankings are not the only goal for search engine marketing. Building many relevant one way links is also a goal. This can only happen over time.

4. SEO Costs $39.95 – When it comes to search engine marketing you really get what you pay for. That doesn’t mean it should cost an arm and a leg but price should be appropriate to amount of work and man hours put into a certain effort in order to get it right. Prices that sound to good to be true usually are. Do you really think you can grow a business online successfully for the same cost as a cup of coffee per day?

5. SEO Software Should Do the Trick – Search engine optimization cannot be put on auto pilot by some software program. Some software’s are capable of isolating gaps or errors in your website or campaign but that still requires you as a business owner or marketer to make the necessary changes to get things moving in the right direction.

There are many misconceptions in the SEO industry and over time they should all be cleared up as the industry continues to mature and evolve. I only highlighted several that came to my mind, please feel free to share any that you may have heard.
