Court Cunningham, CEO of Yodle, recently published “Local Online Advertising for Dummies”, a book to help SMBs “plan and launch an effective local online advertising campaign”, “set up a Web site that draws local traffic” & “maximize your presence on top search engines”.

I haven’t read the book yet, and I am sure it has plenty of good info in it, but I was just looking at the this 343-pager staring at me on my desk and my first thought was “Step 1: hire someone else to do it” :)

What’s in a Name?

The iPad. Unless you were in a coma, you probably heard about the launch of Apple's new tablet. A larger version of the iPhone, at 0.5 inches thick, 1.5 pounds, $499 (base model) + a $29.99 unlimited data plan, it's pretty impressive. You can read all about the reveal and product specs over on Engadget, who covered it live.

There's an interesting subplot going on here, though. The hype around the event was palpable - even the Wall Street Journal noted "Last time there was this much excitement about a tablet, it had some commandments written on it." Indeed, everyone was speculating about the name of the new netbook from Apple - from the iTablet to iSlate. When it was revealed, it looked like nothing more than an oversize iPhone, but as the presentation went on, the functionality became more apparent.

Without a doubt, the tech community - which always gets in a tizzy whenever Apple releases a new product (or if Steve Jobs sneezes) - was so prolific in its buzz that it locked up Twitter for a bit. There's really something to be said about the power of the geeky masses, as words related to the presentation (including Amazon's Kindle, which was mentioned in Job's announcement) accounted for 8 of the 10 trending topics on Twitter at one point.

You've got to wonder about the naming decision on this product. It's certainly in line with the "iP" naming convention of the other two wildly successful product lines, the iPod and iPhone. So from a brand extension, it makes sense. But my first inclination was that "iPad" was too close to "iPod." Surely iTablet or iSlate would have worked from a descriptive standpoint. It led me to wonder if there was something more going on here...

Look carefully at the trending topics for a clue - in addition to phrases like Apple, iBooks, Steve Jobs, Kindle, iPhone, iWork and iSlate, there was as single outlier: iTampon. Check that again - iPad doesn't even show up on the trending topics!

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet."
Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2)

Did Apple anticipate such a viral phenomenon that they intentionally named the product as they did? Or were they completely naive about the implications? Either way, it's lighting up the web as we speak. And it didn't take long for someone to photoshop it, either:

What do you think? Marketing savvy, stunt or stupidity?

Launching the SEOmoz Free API and Enough Power to Build Open Site Explorer

Posted by Nick Gerner

The launch of Open Site Explorer last week opens up a lot of link data, filters, and anchor text to a much wider audience than we’ve ever had before.  In that same vein, today we’re announcing our new and improved SEOmoz Free API.

Any registered (it’s free) SEOmoz member can visit our API Portal and get an API key that gives you access to:

  • Data for any URL in our index including
    • Domain and Page Authority
    • mozRank
    • total link count
    • external, followed link count
  • The first 500 links to any page, sub domain or domain
  • Filtering on those links: 301s, Follows, External, etc.
  • The first 3 domains linking to any page, sub domain or domain
  • The first 3 anchor text terms or phrases in links to any page, sub domain or domain

You’re welcome to use this data for private or publicly-facing purposes. We already have a variety of partners integrating this data including:

Check out some sample code and applications on the wiki.

Our idea is that getting this data into the hands of webmasters makes everyone better off: we’re excited about our new authority scores, marketers are thirsty for metrics, and users of all kinds of tools are better off with a deeper look at real data.  The free package will keep you covered up to a million links per month that you’re free to use for any purpose from consulting to building an SEO campaign management suite.

API Cartoon

In addition to the free API (which I think is quite powerful already), we’re expanding our paid API offering. The paid API includes everything above, but also includes:

  • Additional metrics:
    • number of domains that link to you
    • mozTrust
    • number of links to all pages on your domain
    • and more
  • A deeper look at links, way beyond the first 500 (first 100k for each sort per page, domain or sub domain)
  • Plenty of sorts on links:
    • domain authority
    • page authority
    • linking root domains
  • Way more anchor text terms and phrases (up to 100k per page, domain or sub domain if you’ve got that many)

This is exactly the same API powering Open Site Explorer.  So if you think OSE missed a feature, or should include other data sources, you can build it over again and do an even better job :)   If you do, drop me a line and I’ll take a look. We’d love to share partner apps on our wiki, Twitter, the blog, and elsewhere.

We don’t even have an attribution requirement. Although, we have a tasty 15% discount if you do cite us as a source ;)

To sign up, just contact us, and we’ll start the process.

EDIT: The paid API is available outside of a PRO membership.  A PRO membership buys the tools, and content, and sweet sweet badge.  The paid API is extra.  Of course, the free API is both free and full of awesome.

SEOmoz Builds Open Site Explorer, Community Likes

SEOmoz announced the launch of a new valuable tool named Open Site Explorer. I will not go over the features, every other blog did that.

The tool is extremely powerful, but it is not completely “open” or “free” as the name implies. Either way – the tool is impressive and for the most part, the SEO industry is very pleased with it. That includes Aaron Wall who called it slick, despite being Rand Fishkin’s biggest critic.

Read more about the tool at the SEOmox blog and test it out at opensiteexplorer.org.

If you have been conducting search engine optimization efforts for your website for some time and you are wondering why things just are not working out like they should you might want to take a step back and take a look at some other factors that could be holding your website back from climbing in the rankings.

Here are a few important areas to consider when marketing your online business:

• Proper Steps?
– Did you dive into link building or did you take the proper steps to optimize your website first? If you’re trying to build links without taking the time to focus on your website first you will never see the results you are looking for. Link building before on-site optimization is a lot like putting the buggy before the horse.

• Brand Power – Have your tired to increase the power of your brand? Strong branding elements often times will get a website visitor to reconsider things when they make it to your website. Try either re-branding or branding your business website even more to get people interested what you have to say. Branding is playing an even more important role in today’s market place than it ever has before. Website traffic wants to see your logo and company info in many different places so make sure that you are branding your business actively.

• Website Structure – This is very important, have you taken them time to make sure the layout of your site is completely ready for your business goals. If your goal is online sales on your online store than you should have many ways for that website visitor to make it to your online store. If you want leads your lead form should be visible on every page of your website. You want to make sure your URL’s to all your web pages are clean and optimized and all content is clearly visible on all your web pages.

• Age of Website – Did you just launch your website a few weeks or months ago? If you just recently launched your website you will have to diversify your marketing approach until you start ranking in search results. Rankings are given to websites who have been around for some time and you have to have your expectations in order when launching a recently new website.

Search engine optimization requires a unique and carved out plan that requires some patience and time to get right. It is more than just building relevant inbound links to your website. It is building a business and on any platform building a business brings its own challenges.

What’s The Hold Up With The Google Caffeine Index?

About 6 months ago, the Google Caffeine public preview went live. In November, they took the Caffeine preview offline and since then, webmasters have been on their toes worried about when Caffeine will go live. We had rumor after rumor with speculation that it was live, as recently as a week ago – but each time, they were false alerts.

The question people are now asking in the long WebmasterWorldthread is where is it already? What is the hold up? A good question. For all I know, it may go live a minute after I post this and make me just look bad. But let me quote you one WebmasterWorld member:

Do you remember waaaay back in late Nov./early Dec when MC told the world that Caffeine was being delayed to “save stress on webmasters before the holiday” and it would be rolled out soon afterwards?

Do you remember what I said was the reason back then?

So here’s the question for you, IF as MC said Caffeine was “ready” a month and half ago, where is it now?!

We’re halfway done with January…what’s the hold up?

A solid question and a question that can be asked. Google does not have to answer but it is a good question. Are there major issues with Caffeine? Are there underlying flaws that will prevent what we know Caffeine to be to be launched? Can the failure of such a launch make Google look somewhat inferior to Microsoft Bing?

All questions that Google’s executives and PR team would hate to have to answer. But as time goes on, these questions will begin to be asked.

SEO ROI Jumps Around Like a Kangaroo

If you are trying to calculate your ROI on performing SEO for your business you are going to be greatly disappointed. If you are trying to calculate your ROI on performing SEO for your business you are going to be greatly disappointed. Search engine optimization ROI can be measured over time through an increase of visitors, and conversions (sales, leads, phone calls, etc.). But since SEO is such a long term effort that never really has a finish line and preliminary conversion numbers are virtually impossible to accurately predict over time. The only thing you can really do is improve. Improve, positioning, quality of content, call to actions, incoming relevant links, improve your authority and improve your ROI over time.

It is important to know that search engine optimization is not paid advertising so nobody knows when your website will appear in search results and where it will appear. It’s not like some paid advertising models where you know your ad will appear in a certain spot immediately and how many people visit that location on average. In this scenario you can sort of predict how many visitors might make it to your website. With SEO you cannot put this value on it. Your website takes time to climb and you can’t predict how many other bloggers and writers might begin to write about your business from your SEO efforts ultimately creating new streams of visitors that lead to conversions. Search engine optimization is a combination of proactive marketing and some technical aspects.

How can you put an ROI metric on distributing an article or press release surrounding your business? To many business owners I speak with they try to put an ROI value before they pull the trigger to move forward with search engine optimization which can be challenging. Some decide to not even pursue it because of not being able to identify a value or number on proceeding with the effort. This is the worst thing you can do for your online business. If you launch a Twitter account and begin a conversation and 6 months down the road someone from that conversation decides to become a client how can you predict that occurrence?

Depending on what type of industry you might be in your SEO could take quite a while to really kick in depending on how saturated and competitive your space might be. If you decide to not perform any SEO on your website you are already shooting yourself in the foot. Creating many pathways to your website from a variety of sources is one of the most important ways to build your online business. This process takes time so it is important to start it as soon as possible.
