John Battelle’s recent post as well as an email from a friend turned me to Tynt. John goes into a bunch of detail that I won’t repeat here, but essentially what Tynt does is tracks what people are copying and pasting from your site’s content while also adding an attribution link to your site when they do so.

This is a great idea. It’s a little bit shocking nobody has thought of this until now, but it’s a very useful tool for publishers in a few different ways:

  • Generate more links and traffic to your site – Every time any of your content is pasted into email or a blog post Tynt’s code adds a link to the page the content was copied from. This will help drive users back to the original content, as well as potentially help search engine ranking if those attribution links make it onto web pages.
  • See what type of content is being copied – Tynt provides analytics that shows you what content is being shared and how much traffic it is driving. This can be useful to learn what type of content you should create more of, and what types of people are sharing it so you can see if you’re getting engagement from key audiences.
  • Generate revenue from searches – Tynt recognizes short pieces of copied text as likely searches, and intercepts the search going to one of the major engines and then plans to share the revenue from searches that result in ad clicks with the publishers. I’m not sure this is fully scaled yet, but it looks like a potential revenue stream for larger publishers that could be worthwhile.

That being said, I think Tynt would be more powerful built into a pre-existing analytics service. Having to go to another place to check out your “copy and paste” stats separate from the rest of your analytics is a pain. Additionally, having to place another code snippet on your page is not ideal either, it’d be much easier if this was part of an analytics package that already existed today. Maybe this makes Tynt an acquisition target down the road by either a larger analytic company or one of the search engines who wants to serve search results on Tynt copy and paste search queries. Interesting stuff.

Every few years Google will go through a rather large and drastic algorithm tweak that leaves everyone in the industry running around and scrambling to try to fix any rankings their websites or their client’s websites might lose. There is a great deal of chatter in the industry lately that website load time is going to be a large factor for website rankings. Matt Cutts from Google has said that as it will be important it will not be a major factor yet. Matt describes it in a little more detail in the video below:

Google’s ultimate continuous goal with or without any search engine updates is to increase the speed and efficiency of the search engines which is always a very important aspect of anything technical and online. You really can’t blame Google for wanting to make their search engines highly efficient and lighting quick. After all it is all about the user experience when it comes to using a search engine and if over time the results take longer and longer to appear people will eventually be turned off. Is the search engine optimization industry just getting paranoid? Maybe a little bit but at the end of the day it is still really important to have a very quick and efficient website regardless of what Google says will be a ranking factor.

Whiteboard Friday – Keyword Strategies: Kill the Head or Chase the Tail

Posted by great scott!

Welcome, dear readers, to the first Whiteboard Friday of 2010!! As you may notice, there’s a bit of a new look. This comes in large part from our move to a different video hosting solution. We hope these changes will provide a higher-quality WBF experience, and better accessibility for our viewers around the world. On with the show…

There’s always debate: should you focus on your big head terms, or those wide-ranging tail terms? We’ve invited one of our best mozMates, Will Critchlow of Distilled, to join us for a look at how to balance your keyword strategy.

A major factor in designing your strategy needs to be analytics data. As Will discusses, many people find that analytics show most of their conversions coming from branded keyphrases, but this doesn’t adequately reflect the search path people are following before they make a latent conversion.  In the video Rand and Will discuss how to take this into account and make sure you’re targeting the best phrases for your business and your audience.

Will is currently stuck at the airport trying to get home to the snowed-in United Kingdom, so the post he references in the video isn’t available yet. In the mean time, you can view his slide deck from the "Analytics Every SEO Should Know" presentation he gave at the SEOmoz London Seminar this winter. Slides 23 and 24 show a little bit about first-touch and multi-touch search analytics. Keep an eye here, or on the Distilled blog for his post about doing first-touch analysis in Google Analytics.

I can’t believe how the slightest change in the curves or colors affected my sense of flow and for that reason I spent an unbelievable amount of time perfecting the flow of the piece ever so meticulously. Rupert Murdoch is reported as saying that he plans to de-index his web properties from Google and go to an all-paid subscription format.

In case you never got a chance to see this interview, here it is:

Now, the talk is that Bing.com has had discussions with News Corp about offering exclusive content through its search engine. According to a Financial Times article, Microsoft, the owner of Bing.com, has approached other publishers with a similar deal.

TechCrunch gives a little bit of insight into how this might play out in the long run and who is ultimately behind the coup that seems to be developing right before our very eyes.

The interesting thing I find about all of this is this: If Microsoft did strike a deal with News Corp – and with the top 5 other media publishers as Jason Calacanis suggests – then that would definitely take a bite size chunk out of Google’s search share. No doubt about it. But it would have to happen on a larger scale than what Rupert Murdoch is suggesting. He doing it alone would not work. He would have to get the other media companies to go in with him at the same time.

In other words, a paid indexing deal between Bing.com and News Corp would be like a rock ding on an old Pontiac. A small dent. Nothing more. But if the top 5 media companies at the same time struck the same deal then that would be more like a boulder smashing the top of the Pontiac and flattening it. Google would still be alive, but searchers looking for news content would have to – they’d have no choice – use Bing.com. Google’s search share would plummet within a year.

Another thing that would happen is a bidding war for content indexing. It’s possible that anyone who wants to be indexed at any search engine would then have to pay to be in the index. Once Google lost share it would have no choice but to approach other large publishers to offer an exclusive deal in order to give consumers a reason to use it instead. They could even offer better deals to News Corp and other publishers who were being bought by Microsoft. This would completely change the way webmasters perform search engine marketing. Instead of discouraging paid links, Google would then almost be forced to encourage paid links. The web as we know it today would disappear and the search engine marketing game would change completely.

Is this even possible? Are all these people dreaming or is there really a coup d’etat in the works involving the wealthy media elite and the third most popular search engine? And where is Yahoo! in this mix? Anyone?

Gaping hole costume for Halloween 2009

This year for Halloween I tried to do a see-through hole in your body costume:

It worked okay, but not great. The biggest problem was that I didn’t have a gadget lying around the house that could output live composite video. Both my normal video camera and my digital camera had exhausted batteries that wouldn’t recharge, which is a gadget fail on my part. And while my Flip video camera is tiny and it can output pre-recorded video through a composite cable, it can’t output live video (?!). Lame. I didn’t care enough to buy a new battery-operated gadget that could send out out live video. I settled for projecting scary Halloween images and video, but it wasn’t the same as a hole going right through your body.

I found a plastic “Roman centurion” breastplate for $10, but that led to the second problem: the breastplate was too bulky. I trimmed the breastplate down a lot, but it still was too substantial:

Gaping hole costume

Next time, I’d go with just cardboard and duct tape. On the bright side, the costume was comfortable and quick to take on and off. It wasn’t that hard to make, either. Just a little bit of cutting and duct tape did the trick:

Gaping hole costume

I might circle back to this idea down the road, but I think it’s safe to call Halloween 2009 a mixed bag.

Why ROI Is More Important Than Visitors

For years, web marketers spent a lot of time driving traffic and visitors to websites in hopes that some of that this traffic would lead to conversions (or leads, sales, etc). So much emphasis has been put on traffic that many new webmasters thought that the more visitors they could get to their websites the more successful they would be. But a run-in with reality (and the change of economic times) changes that perception really quickly.

While visitor levels to a website is important – highly targeted visitor levels is and should be more important – the real sign of success with your search engine marketing and online marketing efforts is the ROI or return on investment. I’d much rather have a low-trafficked website making a profit than a high-trafficked website floundering in the red.

So how do you get there? To a positive ROI? Does it involve building visitors and testing?

Well, search engine marketing is the key to success for any website. But not all search engine marketing is equal. Instead of focusing on attracting raw traffic numbers, you should focus on getting targeted traffic to your website and determine what one visitor is worth to you. Furthermore, put a dollar amount on one visitor that converts – a sale or a lead that you close into a sale. When you can determine what a conversion is worth to you then you can determine how much you are willing to pay to get that conversion. After that, it’s all strategy. Focus on the ROI, not the traffic. Also another important take away here is test, test and re-test. Once you are achieving a good return at a small visitor level, then slowly build the results to increase your sales and lead volume, while keeping your ROI in line.

Believe me, this is easier said, then done, but with the right approach, patience and an open mind you can achieve excellent ROI from your search marketing efforts over time…hopefully this post has helped you just a little bit!
