Yahoo and Bing have been hoping and praying that everything with their recent partnership would go through as smoothly as possible with no hang ups. Recently everything was approved for these two giants to be allowed to put their heads together and change things for the future of both businesses. With Bing really increasing in market share and Yahoo decreasing, it was an obvious marriage that had to happen. Don’t forget that Yahoo is still a very powerful website and one of the most trafficked websites in the world. How is this going to change things for SEO professionals who have been focusing on just Google for so many years?

The united pay per click advertising platforms of Bing and Yahoo will surely be a new force in the industry. As reported by the Associated Press they will be sharing ad revenues which is really going to change the way businesses market their websites outside the walls of Google. Bing is also working on a unique partnership with Facebook allowing almost everything in the social network to be completely searchable in the search engines. Pretty soon if you want to find something on a specific person you will be able to search in Bing and it will filter not just for their name but through their profile for items as well. It seems like many people are very excited to see this go through. According to a poll done by Search Engine Journal , 62% of voters think that this partnership is going to give Google a real run for its money. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Don’t be surprised if you see Bing making some serious moves that involve sacrificing revenues just for market share increase. I think these massive search giants want to do anything to just pull users away from Google and they are ready to use anything within their grips to make it happen. There has already been chatter in the industry how there will be a massive forward step to outperform Google’s algorithm in the newly combined search engine.

I think eventually we will see a shift as to how search engine marketing professionals approach their focus. Over time we will see an importance for businesses to be visible in Bing as well as Google. Everything that comes up must come down sooner or later and I don’t think Bing will take out Google but they might pull some of the focus off of it for quite a while if they play their cards right.

I saw a funny forum post this morning about a person asking the community in a an online marketing for the best SEO recipe. That person is already dead in the water right from the start. Let’s take a step back and emphasize how important taking a marketing approach really is when conducting a search engine optimization campaign for your business or website. When you start off asking for a recipe for your search engine optimization program, you are really setting yourself up for disaster. Your search engine optimization should never look like a science project.

The search engines have been evolving since their birth many years ago. When they first came on the scene, instantly many highly technical “marketers” started manipulating the algorithm to get web pages to appear high up in search results. Search engines really dislike it when people do this. Over time they have consistently tweaked and changed their algorithm to get these people to stop manipulating the system to get their bogus web pages to rank. Some have disappeared and some have evolved to find new loop holes in the system. Remember that rankings alone do not generate business. Rankings are just one factor out of a basket filled with other marketing factors that should be utilized as well. Online shoppers are changing drastically. Over the last few years during the economic down turn many people have realized that they need to change their shopping behaviors. Many have already made the change in slowing down spending affecting the way people market their businesses. Making many technical sweeping changes to get your website to rank is not the answer you need. Online customers want to bump in your pay per click ad, they want to see you communicating with your audience online, they want to see you branding yourself and making at attempt to be visible in front of them in many different ways before they decide to call you or pull out their credit card to make a purchase on your website.

The evolution of the search engine and the relationship it has with online customers is rapidly evolving. You should not be looking for an SEO “recipe” but rather an SEO internet marketing plan to help grow your business. SEO and marketing together are very powerful. They create many multiple quality pathways and links pointing to your website that can really generate a great deal of targeted traffic to any website.

Do You Compete in PPC Bid Wars?

A WebmasterWorld thread has new discussion around the topic of pay-per-click (PPC) bidding wars. A PPC bidding war is when two or more advertisers want to out bid each other in the search ads in order to either deplete the funds of the competition or to secure a certain position in the search results.

With the PPC ranking models these days, it is often hard to just compete on price for the top search ad – although it is possible. But bidding wars are somewhat more frequent amongst new advertisers and large brands with large budgets.

The question I have for you is, do you do this? Do you ever compete in PPC bid wars? I doubt I got all the possible options below, but try to not use the “other” option if possible.

Yahoo Search Marketing Down For Some Advertisers

A WebmasterWorld thread reports that Yahoo Search Marketing is down for some. When some advertisers are trying to use Yahoo’s pay per click ad system, they get an error.

The error reads:

We are currently experiencing a technical issue that is causing the ads of some advertisers to not be displayed properly to users. This may cause your account to receive a lower volume of clicks than normal. We are aware of this issue, and are working diligently to resolve it as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

So far, we have two confirmed reports of this bug in the WebmasterWorld thread.

I am not sure how widespread the issue is or if it is resolved yet.

Yahoo updated the thread, saying:

I can confirm that this issue was resolved at approximately 10:30 a.m. Pacific Time on December 15, and ads should be displaying normally since then. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Google Sues For Trademark Infringement?

OK, here’s a good one. You own the distribution model for paid-for advertising. You allow advertisers to spend money to distribute their ads through your network using your name. You even take their money. Then you sue them for using your name.

OK, here’s a good one. You own the distribution model for paid-for advertising. You allow advertisers to spend money to distribute their ads through your network using your name. You even take their money. Then you sue them for using your name.

That’s what Google is doing. Suing advertisers who use the Google name in pay-per-click ads on Google.

Wait a minute. With all of Google’s fancy schmancy technology, they can’t block ads that use the keyword “Google”? There’s just something about this that doesn’t seem right.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not condoning the work-at-home scams. There are a ton of them. And using another company’s good name to scam people out of their money using trickery, outright lies, deception, and other nefarious deeds is just flat wrong. But if you own the distribution channel for the ads surely you can stop the ads from displaying to begin with. Can’t you? Imagine this scenario: Your local newspaper takes money from an advertiser for running ads promising to make people rich using your local newspaper’s name (fill in the blank). Then the newspaper sues the advertiser for making money off the use of the newspaper’s name. Will it fly?

I don’t think it will. The obvious argument for the defense here is that the company, in this case Google, has the technology, the overall ability, and the motivation for blocking the ads before they run. Therefore, they’re as guilty as the advertiser.

What do you think? Is this a case of trademark infringement or just a bad case of Google With Head Up Butt Syndrome? Or even worst these type of Google scams spend so much money that they don’t mind making some additional money from them until these advertisers get themselves in trouble and then they take action? I don’t know, but this is is an interesting topic for sure!

PPC Landing Pages or Natural / Organic SEO Landing Pages?

PPC Landing Pages or Natural / Organic SEO Landing Pages?

What if each page in your website ranked specifically for the group of primary keywords it was crafted for? Essentially, this is the advantage of PPC. However, with virtual theming and internal links you can tell search engines which pages you would prefer to rank for specific keywords.

Dilemmas such as paying for click fraud or paying for low conversions from lackluster broad match terms could be replaced entirely with organic / natural results as through aligning specific landing pages with specific keywords and optimizing them to appear in non sponsored rankings.

This tactic works well for content-rich websites that have a history of adding content frequently. If you have a robust website, then multiple pages in your site  can inherently be used as supporting pages to provide buoyant ranking factor when consolidated.

The Number One Rule of SEO

That might sound like a silly question – what should be the number one rule when it comes to Search Engine Optimization? However, everyone has their own ideas. For some it relates to keywords, for others, on-site optimization or off-site optimization (or link building). It may sound like I am repeating the same philosophy all the time – here is a different twist.

When it comes to SEO, every site, every business is unique in every respect. They are have their own set of unique requirements and their own unique blend of options that can help lift them to the front page of the search results. While there may be a range of basic white hat optimization strategies that every site can implement, once you get past the basics it is a different story.

Some businesses can succeed with pure organic search results; others may need the help of pay per click advertising. Another business may find that social media marketing through the use of videos delivers more and better targeted visitors than organic search on its own.

To be successful online now you need a blended strategy that uses every available channel promote your business. You also need a website that fulfills all the requirements needed to be successful – that includes design, content and usability. A mistake can be to try and copy what another business has done – it often doesn’t migrate to your business because you haven’t taken the same direction with other strategies.

So – the number one rule (for want of a better phrase) is that each business is different and each business requires a different set of strategies to succeed online.
