It is important to know that Google actually endorses SEO related services when they are done correctly. On Google’s webmaster central they have a series of bullet points that should be a concern for every person or business of acquiring some sort of search engine optimization services for their business. They cover some of the most important points I have been stressing for many years.

“No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or by submitting a Sitemap and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.”

Right from the mouth of Google! If you speak with an SEO company that is guaranteeing search engine rankings I would walk in the opposite direction because nobody can guarantee any sort of rankings when it comes to search.

Be careful if a company is secretive or won’t clearly explain what they intend to do.
Ask for explanations if something is unclear. If an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, such as doorway pages or “throwaway” domains, your site could be removed entirely from Google’s index. Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire, so it’s best to be sure you know exactly how they intend to “help” you. If an SEO has FTP access to your server, they should be willing to explain all the changes they are making to your site.”

There are no secrets with SEO. It is simply the process of marketing your business and in return you generate great search rankings over time as your efforts age to help build visitors to your website. You have to develop trust in the search engines and prove you are a legitimate brand and business and over time you will be rewarded with improved search engine rankings. Don’t believe anyone that claims they have the “secrets” to SEO because it doesn’t work that way. When Google comes out and tells you that it is a very distasteful approach to take you need to listen and adhere to their warnings so that you don’t get burned by any SEO firms.

If you are in the business of offering a search engine optimization services to the public, you will most likely completely understand where I am coming from as I write this blog post. Before I continue, I want to point out, that I love what I do, working with clients to help build their businesses through SEO and SEM.

At some point the industry veered off course because some clients look at you like you are the enemy right from initial phone call. I view at each client like a partner, I have been hired to grow their business and my only goal is to do just that. I think this is important to discuss because it seems to be getting worse for many other search engine marketing professionals. I know the past 12 to 24 months has been tough for all of us, but there is not excuse! Anyway, I encourage SEO folks, marketers, web developers, web designers and clients to read and contribute your thoughts and experiences to this blog post.

In my opinion, here are a handful of some of the top characteristics that a bad SEO client portrays:

1. Poor Communication: A large bottleneck that quite often occurs is a lack of response or communication from a client. When you set up scheduled meetings and consistently get blown off this will eventually lead to a much larger problem. Search engine optimization often times requires education and reasoning as to why an effort is being done and these meetings are vital for things to keep moving smoothly. In order for no surprises to ever occur, client, service provider communication is essential. A lack of communication from either party usually leads to loss of business.

2. Poor Company Organization: Have you ever worked with a company that couldn’t get out of its own way? Nothing is worse than having to get approval from 6 different people about let’s say, on site optimization recommendations. Often times this leads to numerous unnecessary revisions by company employees that have no business looking at this in the first place. For instance and IT Director and Sales Director really have no need to be involved. There should be one point of contact to allow for things to operate smoothly and efficiently. Too many chefs in the kitchen usually spoils the soup.

3. We are NOT the Enemy: Plain and simple your SEO service provider is NOT the enemy. We have been hired to complete the job of helping you build your business online through a variety of sources and efforts. Some clients approach purchasing SEO services like insurance. Nobody wants to buy insurance but we have to. Yes SEO is intangible but results can be seen from month to month and over time. Treating us like we are against you right from the start is not going to create a smooth relationship. Actually it will be quite the opposite and it will be rocky from the beginning.

SEO Should Not Look Like Science Project

Often times I get phone calls from potential clients that start off telling me how they are looking for search engine optimization services and begin to ask for certain requirements on the strategy side of things. There is nothing wrong with that except that some of the requests look more like a recipe for a science project than actually online marketing efforts to help grow a business.

Since when did building a business online go from a traditional marketing mind set to a formula? Yes the search engines run on a mathematical algorithm but approaching the process of building an online business through quantitative efforts is not exactly the best approach. What if you hire a search engine optimization expert and they make the strategy look like a giant science project with no actual marketing elements? Sure you might get some keyword rankings but if your website has not one conversion marketing aspect on it corrected all the rankings in the world will not get your site to convert well or even at all. Major announcements have come out recently regarding significant changes in the ways that search results pull information and I can bet that this type of science project approach to search engine optimization is going to go away very soon. Since the day the search engines where introduced to the public the engineers have been working hard to clean up search results and get rid of websites that take scientific approaches like this. Long term search engine optimization is about creating in bound marketing efforts with quality content. Having well campaigned viral marketing efforts sweep through an industry like a giant wave or have well written articles, so well written that every online magazine and blog just has to write about it. This is what search marketing is all about, not how many PR3 links you can get in one month.

The definition of SEO is partially the fault of the search engines. Certain changes are consistently being made making everyone shift their focuses in other directions. It fundamentally starts at the search engine so if they allow it what else can you really do but follow the path that has been paved. This is the reason why so many businesses are just worried about rankings which is a horrible way to approach your online business. If your search engine marketing strategy for your company looks like something out of a chemistry class I think it might be time to rethink your plan a little bit. Some of the best SEO approaches have a strong emphasis and marketing and branding. Those three elements combined can go much farther than just rankings.
