The truth about SEO and who to trust in the industry is very complicated. That is why so many people are so confused when they are ready to pull the trigger and decide where and how they need assistance. Every company has a different approach and no two pricing models are alike. How do you know where to turn to? The reality is that things have changed over the last few years and they are even changing as we write this blog post.

Let’s look at some of the biggest factors and industry changes that have occurred just over the last few years that have changed the SEO industry and will most likely continue to change the industry as time goes on:

1. Social Media: Social media came in like a ferocious wave and just hit the entire world with an entirely new form of communication. Everything changed, how business communicate, how people communicate, where people go to seek information, how people meet, how people purchase, all this is just scratching the surface. All of a sudden marketers focus was not just around the search engines. All of a sudden their clients and their own audience were hanging out in this giant wave of chatter. SEO people had no choice but to get involved in this type of communication. Suddenly a quality communication approach was needed. You couldn’t just throw sub par press releases at these people otherwise you would be stoned in the town square.

2. Video Sharing: You can try to mash up a video using a generic movie maker software but chances are you will not benefit a great deal from it. Video sharing has created a new form of expression. Creativity combined with SEO makes for very powerful marketing efforts that could actually make an impact on a client’s bottom line.

3. Content Marketing: All of a sudden having a blog on a website and regularly writing and pushing the material out to the community were more important than ever. Creating link schemes and science projects to increase rankings are no longer the right approach. Content creates credibility and if a marketer can put out great writing in the right places their SEO can grow tenfold.

4. SEO Industry Trust – Practice What You Preach: It amazes me when I see so many sub par SEO consultants and firms that don’t know how to market themselves. The reality is SEO is so much more than just search engine rankings; it’s about marketing and building an online presence and reputation. The way I see it is if an SEO professional has no online presence then they should try another profession. If they can’t build it for themselves, how can they be trusted to build it for a potential client?

It is important to acknowledge that the SEO industry is changing very quickly and those who neglect to adopt that change will find themselves wondering what happened.

Yahoo and Bing have been hoping and praying that everything with their recent partnership would go through as smoothly as possible with no hang ups. Recently everything was approved for these two giants to be allowed to put their heads together and change things for the future of both businesses. With Bing really increasing in market share and Yahoo decreasing, it was an obvious marriage that had to happen. Don’t forget that Yahoo is still a very powerful website and one of the most trafficked websites in the world. How is this going to change things for SEO professionals who have been focusing on just Google for so many years?

The united pay per click advertising platforms of Bing and Yahoo will surely be a new force in the industry. As reported by the Associated Press they will be sharing ad revenues which is really going to change the way businesses market their websites outside the walls of Google. Bing is also working on a unique partnership with Facebook allowing almost everything in the social network to be completely searchable in the search engines. Pretty soon if you want to find something on a specific person you will be able to search in Bing and it will filter not just for their name but through their profile for items as well. It seems like many people are very excited to see this go through. According to a poll done by Search Engine Journal , 62% of voters think that this partnership is going to give Google a real run for its money. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Don’t be surprised if you see Bing making some serious moves that involve sacrificing revenues just for market share increase. I think these massive search giants want to do anything to just pull users away from Google and they are ready to use anything within their grips to make it happen. There has already been chatter in the industry how there will be a massive forward step to outperform Google’s algorithm in the newly combined search engine.

I think eventually we will see a shift as to how search engine marketing professionals approach their focus. Over time we will see an importance for businesses to be visible in Bing as well as Google. Everything that comes up must come down sooner or later and I don’t think Bing will take out Google but they might pull some of the focus off of it for quite a while if they play their cards right.

With the search engines evolving and changing it is important for your efforts to really have some sort of personality applied to them.

Let’s take a look at some of the areas you can give your online marketing efforts a kick start to get people wanting to click on your website:

Online PR: Instead of just sending out a press release to get more links why not trying to send it out to get great links and fantastic press. If you send out dull pr you might notice that there are some blogs that pick up anything just to build content. That is not going to help you or your business. If you want a major online publication to pick up your pr topic you will have to give that pr topic a bit more flavor. Try announcing a new client that might be larger than normal if they allow for their name to be used. Maybe you have formed some sort of partnership that is worthy of a headline. This is more likely to get picked up and receive better links than just announcing a new section of a website launching. Put some personality into the pr and it will go much further.


Social Media:
Instead of just launching a Twitter or Facebook page and dropping links to your blog posts take a different approach. If you can get your community conversing with you your social efforts will go much further just helping your SEO efforts in the process. SEO is much more than just creating rankings, it is about building your business online so it requires more than just placing links here and there. Ask questions in your community. If you have followers in your Twitter account people will respond you just need to give them a reason to do so. Ask relevant industry questions to get some conversations started.

Video Marketing: Video marketing is a great way to really spread your presence online but you have to do it the right way. If you have the budget buy a decent camera, a tripod and some editing software. Take the time and make some good solid promotional videos to help you spread the word online. If you make it right people will pick up your video and blog about it. This action will give you nice strong links pointing to your website. Always shoot for making your video viral.

Putting some personality into your marketing will allow things to go much further online for your business than if you didn’t. People don’t respond to just links, they respond to marketing so go and brand yourself as a real business online.

Even third string keywords with much less search volume are becoming very tough to be visible for. This is why it is even more important to really focus on marketing and branding your business online and focusing much less on breaking into search results.

Prime example on why all businesses need to take a slightly different approach when trying to market a new business online. The days of only focusing on ranking for search results are slowly coming to an end and the need for strong branding and marketing is really starting to play a significant role in all SEO related campaigns. Don’t get me wrong, a well built and optimized website along with a strong effective link building campaign is always going to be a very important aspect for any growing and new starting business but websites are going to have to start taking a vastly different approach to market themselves in search results.

It’s always better to compete for a high rank for a few keywords in the tail than to merely settle for a middling or worse rank for the most popular keywords in the head (settling for mediocrity is what most webmasters do, and thus why there’s so often good opportunities for the taking).”

This is important to understand because a new website is going to take some real time to rank for any primary keywords. Spend your focus worrying about some of the long tail keyword phrases that already exist in your industry that could be available for you to build your business now rather than later.

Just building links for the sake of building links is not going to benefit you or the search engines. Links that sit on irrelevant websites can actually hurt you a great deal over time. A link sitting a website that is part of a blog farm is not going to benefit you in any possible way. If you are not sure what a blog farm it is a farm of blogs that a company will use to place links for clients or other websites in order to increase rankings. These blog farms usually have absolutely no strength or power in the search engines but appear to do so. Don’t assume that spending more money is going to get you more quality links. It is not about how much you spend but more so about how good your marketing message is. A promotion that gets your audience talking and bloggers writing will get you much farther than just purchasing a link on a website. Many different businesses take a variety of different approaches in the search engine marketing industry but purchasing links is very frowned upon. Buying a service that generates thousands of links for you is only going to create a mess of your online marketing approach and hurt you in the long run. How good do you really think those thousand links are going to be? Do you think they generate any value to your business?

Link building should always be done with a quality approach. A blog post on an industry related blog that is an authority in your industry is an example of a great link. A major business publication doing a write up on you for their online division is a great link. A “directory blaster” is a horrible way to generate links and should be avoided at all costs. Link building should be conducted using a strategy and a schedule and not with a number goal. A combination of a variety of monthly efforts is an approach that will help you climb in the search results over time.

When you start off asking for a recipe for your search engine optimization program, you are really setting yourself up for disaster. Your search engine optimization should never look like a science project.

The search engines have been evolving since their birth many years ago. When they first came on the scene, instantly many highly technical “marketers” started manipulating the algorithm to get web pages to appear high up in search results. Search engines really dislike it when people do this. Over time they have consistently tweaked and changed their algorithm to get these people to stop manipulating the system to get their bogus web pages to rank. Some have disappeared and some have evolved to find new loop holes in the system. Remember that rankings alone do not generate business. Rankings are just one factor out of a basket filled with other marketing factors that should be utilized as well. Online shoppers are changing drastically. Over the last few years during the economic down turn many people have realized that they need to change their shopping behaviors. I think one of the best things I have ever heard a webmaster blog from a major search engine say is to build your website like a brand. Bing’s exact words state: “Develop your site as a business brand and be consistent about that branding in your content”

To many people out there get all antsy to have their internet marketing look like a recipe. If it looks like a recipe it is a recipe for disaster. Bing’s official webmaster blog states that it is very important and vital to treat your website like a brand. How would a brand build its image? If you take that step you will build your business the right way rather than just go after rankings. Rankings are important but they are not the only and final goal you should be worried about for your internet marketing campaign. Building business is the most important aspect to your SEO campaign. Bing also recommends taking an approach that really utilizes a robust social marketing element into your daily routine. Link building is very vital to the success of a website but unfortunately it is important to do it in a way that allows your business to grow and not just your rankings. Bing also refers to going “unnatural” in the search engines which states that an unnatural approach is one that blatantly attempts to manipulate the system in order to achieve higher rankings.

Bing’s exact words go as follows:
” So what does it mean to go unnatural? It means you’re trying to fake out the search engines, to try to earn a higher ranking that the quality of your site’s content dictates as natural through manipulation of search engine ranking algorithms.”

Bing hasn’t been the first search engine to come out with this type of best practice’s guide. Google has been doing it for years now just not many people want to follow it. Often times people think that just because they have a few websites that placing links on all of them will help them with their link building efforts when most likely it will negatively impact their search engine results. Cross linking websites works when information is relative and beneficial to the user. If you cross link websites simply to manipulate search engine results to gain rankings the search engines they are going to pick up on that very quickly and penalize your website. Once your website is penalized it could takes months to get it back to where it once was. Matt Cutts states that if the websites are under the same corporate umbrella and they make sense to link to each other than there shouldn’t be a problem. You want to keep in mind that this like any other online marketing effort requires a tasteful approach and abusing it will results in serious ramifications from the search engines.

Always take a tasteful approach to your search engine optimization and internet marketing and keep in mind the user experience. If you over “SEO” you’re online efforts and your user experience starts to diminish you will not get any of the conversion you where hoping to get so it is very important to keep this in mind.

For years people have always made an effort to really focus on increasing their Google pagerank as much as possible. I always ask people, what is it about Google pagerank that makes you want to increase it so badly? Many times they really didn’t know how to answer the question or at least answer it correctly.

For many years Google pagerank was the sought out factor for many people diving into search engine optimization. Over the years it has been severely abused as people seek out science project like marketing campaigns only to increase page rank. News flash, rankings alone don’t grow a business and the search engines are really starting to evolve and change the way that they rank websites. They are tweaking and modifying search engines to only reward those who take a natural approach to building their business. An approach that builds over time with heavy branding and marketing elements rather than pouncing on loop holes to achieve rankings in search engines. Internet marketing company HubSpot based out of Boston MA had this to say about Google page rank: “Page Rank has nothing to do with SEO rankings or results. I know of websites that have a Page Rank of 0, and yet they still get organic rankings and search traffic for competitive search terms.”

Basically what HubSpot is saying is that businesses and websites should be focusing on building their brand and their business and not worrying about what the Google pagerank of their website is. At the end of the day page rank does not offer any value. You can’t track where your page rank comes from or why it is even there. It has almost become a distraction for website owners that have lost focus on what it really means to market your business online. Even Google has removed any mention of pagerank from their guidelines.

A recent Q&A session on one of Google’s forums had this to say:
“Q: My site’s PageRank has gone up / gone down / not changed in months!
A: Don’t worry. In fact, don’t bother thinking about it. We only update the PageRank displayed in Google Toolbar a few times a year; this is our respectful hint for you to worry less about PageRank, which is just one of over 200 signals that can affect how your site is crawled, indexed and ranked. PageRank is an easy metric to focus on, but just because it’s easy doesn’t mean it’s useful for you as a site owner. If you’re looking for metrics, we’d encourage you to check out Analytics, think about conversion rates, ROI (return on investment), relevancy, or other metrics that actually correlate to meaningful gains for your website or business.”

When Google comes out and says it than you better believe that it is true in every possible way. You can read more about Google’s view point on page rank on the Google webmaster forum. I given touched on the subject of Google PageRank sculpting as a waste of time a few months ago as well.
