We are all sort of accustomed to seek out rankings for organic search only but there are actually many different areas of search other than just organic that is equally important for online business to be visible in.

Below are a few of the more important ones all websites should keep an eye on:

• Image Search –
Many search online everyday through image searches to find what they need. If you have a website or blog that uses a great deal of images it is important to optimize those images so that can rank in image search as well. Make the URL of the image friendly along with your image alt tag. Over time you will notice in your analytics information how many people will make it to your website just from using the image search feature.

• Video Search – This is an area that has seen explosive growth over the last few years and will most likely continue to see even more as time goes on. Take the time and make an effort to put out some sort of company video for your business. Prospects will enjoy seeing the video appear in search results. There are ways to get this done on a budget.

• Social Search – You know social search? The thing that everyone is buzzing about now? Well search engines are starting to really index online conversations so it is time to take your online conversation to the next step. Get your audience bumping into your conversations online.

• Real Time Search – Real time search is happening right now! The search engines are getting super fast so they index material very quickly. Are you adding useful material everyday for the search engines to gobble up?

These are just some of the more important areas of search to be visible in. The search engines are starting to evolve and offer much more to the end user so it is important for your brand and your business to be visible in all the different areas of search not just the organic. A few years from now we will most likely see this list grow even more so take advantage of it while it is just beginning otherwise you could find yourself spending a great deal of time and resource to make up for lost time down the road.

Google and Yelp Could Change Local Search

It looks like Google is about to acquire Yelp. No surprise, really. Is there a vertical Google hasn’t made a purchase in?

Two things happen when Google makes an acquisition in a vertical. A competitor comes along and outdoes them or Google develops the vertical into a profitable enterprise for itself. Notice I didn’t say Google improves the vertical.

Well, Yelp pretty much owns the local business review vertical. There are very few companies even competing over that space. So if Google does acquire Yelp it will be one more vertical the search giant owns by virtue of its bigness. That’s not saying that local business reviews and local search will necessarily improve. But it will change.

All the major search engines already have local business centers, but at present they are nothing more than directories with bells and whistles. Sites like Yelp actually are better at attracting the local business audience. So Google will naturally want to advertise to that market and capture that audience. How will local search change?

For one thing, I think it will become pay per click advertising centered. I’d look to see how Google marries AdWords and Yelp to better help local businesses reach their target market. Another marriage that could ensue is Yelp and YouTube – local video search anyone? I see many great possibilities for improvement of Yelp with Google muscle behind it.

Yes, I think local search would change forever. How drastically is really anyone’s guess.

Yesterday, we showed you a video demo of Google’s Social Search. Well, now it is available for all to play with in google.com/experimental.

Personally, I think this can work well for my searchers. But for most of those who do not have Google Profiles set up, it likely won’t add much. Google currently promises to only look at information you give to them via your Google Profile or via Gmail. For Google to know who your Twitter connections are, you need to share that information on your Google Profile. Then Google will crawl your social profiles and make a map of all your friends, and associate what they read in Google Reader, share, click on and produce with you, when you search.

Of course, there are some worried that Google will go beyond their boundaries and figure out your social profile without you specifically sharing it. Google said they won’t, but many don’t trust Google.
